Exploring the Future of Data at the Microsoft Fabric Conference in Vienna 2025
Summary by: Scott Davies, Business Intelligence Consultant at Climber.
Between 15 and 18 September, James Sharp and I had the privilege of attending the Microsoft Fabric Community Conference in Vienna – and what an experience it was! This was our first time at FabCon, and the scale was impressive: 4,200+ attendees, 130 sessions, and 10 full-day workshops, all focused on the future of data, AI, and analytics.
My personal highlights
For a full list of the announcements, you can review the Fabric blog post, but these were some that I found interesting.
1. UI Improvements
- Tabbed Interface with Colour Coding: Microsoft Fabric now supports a browser-like tabbed interface with colour-coded workspaces and an object explorer, making multitasking easier.
- Better Navigation in Dataflow Gen2: Switching between objects is now seamless – no more frustrating interruptions.

2. User Defined Functions in DAX
Now in preview, this feature allows advanced users to create reusable custom functions within a semantic model. A big win for efficiency and consistency.
3. Microsoft Power BI Agents
Copilot was everywhere at FabCon, and the introduction of Power BI Agents in Microsoft 365 stood out. Users can now ask natural language questions and get AI-driven answers based on verified reports and curated visuals. This is a game-changer for business users seeking quick insights.
4. Performance Enhancements
Microsoft Fabric is getting faster. Reduced load times and improved responsiveness will make a noticeable difference for developers and analysts alike.
5. Doing More in the Browser
For Mac users, this is huge: full Microsoft Power BI report development is coming to the browser. The days of being tied to the Windows desktop app are numbered.

Beyond Microsoft Power BI: Graph and Maps in Microsoft Fabric
Two exciting previews:
- Graph in Microsoft Fabric: A low-code way to model and query relationships across enterprise data, turning raw data into a knowledge graph for AI-driven insights.
- Realtime Maps in Microsoft Fabric: Native geospatial analytics for IoT, logistics, and operational intelligence, with partnerships from ESRI and Neo4j.

AI and Copilot Everywhere
AI dominated the conference. Microsoft is embedding Copilot across Fabric and Power BI, enabling natural language insights, automated pipeline creation, and AI-powered governance. Integration with Azure AI Foundry means organisations can now build and deploy AI agents grounded in enterprise data faster than ever.
Networking and Community
FabCon wasn’t just about tech – it was about people. We connected with industry legends like Adam Saxton and Patrick LeBlanc from Guy in a Cube, met Wyn Hopkins from Access Analytics, and engaged with our Microsoft Partner representatives. The Expo floor was buzzing with innovative solutions and opportunities to strengthen partnerships. It was especially great to see our Partner TimeXtender there demonstrating how their product helps automate the creation of a Microsoft Fabric data warehouse. And of course, we socialised with business partners and colleagues, getting to know people outside of their work environments which was great.

What This Means for Our Customers
At Climber, our mission is to deliver the best solutions for our clients. Staying ahead of the curve with events like FabCon ensures we are up to date on new developments, aware of innovative partner solutions, and connected to smart people in the industry. Furthermore, events like this inspire and energise you to learn and do more!
Looking Ahead
Microsoft Fabric is less than two years old, yet it’s already redefining how businesses approach data and AI. The roadmap is clear: context, connectivity, and intelligence at scale. We’re excited to help our clients modernise their data estates, enable AI responsibly, and drive business outcomes faster.
The next FabCon Europe will be in Barcelona, and we’ll be there. Until then, it’s time to put these insights into action.
